WHO WE ARE

Artmakers Inc. is an artist-run, politically-oriented community mural organization that creates high-quality public art relevant to the lives, work and concerns of people in their neighborhoods.  Established in 1983, Artmakers has created nearly 90 murals primarily in New York City, but also nationally and internationally.

Artmakers was founded by five activist artists: Eva Cockcroft, Joe Stephenson, Camille Perrottet, Maria Dominguez and Leslie Bender. Eva Cockcroft served as the organization’s first artistic director until her move in 1989 to Los Angeles.

Eva was succeeded by Kristen Reed (1990), Janet Braun-Reinitz (1991-2013) and Camille Perrottet (since 2013). The organization’s administrative director since 1991, Jane Weissman is currently its co-director.

Artmakers artists reflect the cultural diversity of New York City. Their collective work with the city’s community and cultural organizations spans the last four decades.  Many are teaching artists and educators in New York City schools and museums, as well as exhibiting artists.

Artmakers works in collaboration with community based organizations, block associations, LDCs, public schools, community gardens, health care and mental health facilities, homeless shelters, day care centers and other arts organizations. Artmakers helps groups determine mural themes and content, and involves them in all aspects of the murals’ creation.

Depending on the project and available funding, Artmakers involves young people in its murals as paid apprentices through its Pre-Professional Training Program. Exposed and held to the highest possible aesthetic standards, they learn valuable skills – both artistic and job-related.

Artmakers artists often consult with community groups interested in organizing community murals on their own and, for a moderate fee, will provide on-site visits, design workshops, and production advice.
